Chapter 19
Marie and Edward sneaked out after the breakfast and visited a couple of places they usually go to in Devon. Marie is very fond of Edward. He was her first love actually. Who wouldn’t fall for the compelling green gazes of this nobleman?
Edward is the elder brother of Stephen. He will assume the throne when he finds his wife or when his father dies. Edward has always been very responsible. He has taken care of the estate whenever the Duke is ill. The estate is more progressive than it was before, because of Edward’s radical and innovative ideas. He has always been regarded as the best man for the Dukedom and the people appreciates the amiable qualities of Edward.
Every lady has the right to be smitten to him. His sage green eyes can be captivating whenever he wants. His lips were thin but full, and his smile is absolutely enthralling. His witty retorts receive the most compliments. He is intelligent, conscientious, and of course, handsome. He is enormously wealthy, too. Who wouldn’t fall for him? Marie is not an exception.
“Marie, I have observed something.” Edward said. Trailing his words which made Marie more tensed.
“What is it, Edward? Tell me.” She asked curiously, couldn’t take the thrill of Edward’s pause. “Is it me, or the way Sebastian stared at me when I bantered was different? And cold.” Edward replied hesitantly.
It took long before Marie replied.
“Yes. It is different and cold.”
“And may I ask why would that be, Marie?”
Marie turned to face him. She held his hands, and she was about to cry. She told her everything that happened couple of days ago and why they went to Devon in a rush. They didn’t informed Sebastian that they would be coming to Devon and that may have caused more anger. She told Edward she loved him but she wants to move on. She cannot live peacefully when he is nearby. She knows that he will chase her.
“That bastard!” Edward said as he heard the tormenting story of Marie.
He placed his arms around her and pulled her closer to him. He embraced her tightly and wiped the tears away.
He gave her a kiss on the forehead and bellowed angrily, “That filthy bastard, who the hell does he think he is?”
“He is your cousin and the Prince of Wales. Remember that, Edward.” Marie murmured.
“I don’t care if he is my father or the prince of the world! He has no right to hurt you; and to show all his scandalous affairs to you. Damned him!”
“Hush, Edward.”
Marie remained in his arms and never felt this completeness when she saw Sebastian kissing another lady in the public opera house. She knows that she can always turn to Edward. He loves her too. He confessed it before. And she realized, it has never changed.
“Marie,” he whispered achingly to her.
“Yes?”
“I promise to protect you.” Marie smiled at him and he returned the gesture.
